Flu shot during pregnancy: protection for you and the baby
In our midwifery practice, we not only consider the health of you as an expectant mother, but also that of the future baby to be of paramount importance. Getting the flu shot during pregnancy is a topic that is often discussed during our consultation hours as a midwife. Let's discover together why it is not only useful for you as an expectant mother, but also crucial for the protection of the newborn baby.
Why get the flu shot during pregnancy?
Risks to newborns
Newborn babies are at increased risk of serious complications from influenza, including hospitalization. The good news is that if the expectant mother receives the flu shot during pregnancy, the baby is significantly less likely to develop the flu from birth.
Possible consequences of flu during pregnancy
Flu can have serious consequences for both newborns and pregnant women. Babies can become seriously ill, sometimes to the point of requiring hospitalization. Pregnant women with flu are at increased risk of hospitalization, emphasizing why preventive measures are essential.
How does the flu vaccination work?
After the flu vaccination, the pregnant woman's body produces antibodies against the flu virus. These antibodies pass through the placenta to the baby, which means that the baby is protected against flu in the first months after birth. In addition, the pregnant woman herself enjoys this protection. The vaccine itself does not reach the baby directly.
Is the flu shot safe during pregnancy?
The flu shot is safe for both the baby and the pregnant woman.
